After this innovative approach to sediment control on construction site entrances garnered high demand from contractors in North America, JWA Oil wanted to make this product available to their contractors on the southern hemisphere. A field test was suggested to let local contractors get some hands-on experience with the product and provide feedback.
FODS Reusable Construction Entrance was tested in south east Australia on two of Victoria’s major road and rail infrastructure projects: Metro Tunnel Project and West Gate Tunnel Project.
Results & Feedback
After 30 days across 5 sites in Melbourne, this was the feedback:
FODS are easy to handle and move around. On one particularly busy site, ground crew assembled the mats away from the entrance and moved them into place when there was a break in site traffic.
FODS can be installed on a range of surfaces without the need to dig a trench.
FODS are ideal for tight sites and short exit points.
FODS are effective and have been demonstrated to reduce the frequency of street sweeping by 40%.
FODS captured captured significant volume of sediment even when placed after two other traditional BMPs.
FODS are tough. An 80-ton steel cleat piling rig drove over the mats without any issues.
Advantages Of FODS Composite Trackout Mats
Unlike other solutions, FODS Trackout Mats are lightweight and do not require heavy equipment to install, maintain or relocate. FODS Trackout Mats can be installed in 30 minutes on any substrate including asphalt and soil. The trackout system works by using a geometric pattern of pyramids which deform vehicle tires by spreading tire treads which allows trapped sediment and debris to break loose. Mats can be refreshed by quickly and easily by cleaning the sediment off with a FODS shovel. Alternatively, mats can be cleaned using a skid steer with an attached angle broom.
FODS mats have proven effective on high traffic job sites. In one example, a site had traffic exceeding 800 truckloads of soil exiting over the mats per day. They had switched from traditional aggregate entrances to FODS Trackout Control Mats and engineers and inspectors collaborated to collect data on the effectiveness of the system. They reported a 59% reduction in street sweeping and noted that less time and effort was required to refresh the entrance after soil built up or rain events.
