FODS in the Field

Tennessee Contractors Choose FODS

The Nashville metro economy has quickly become the envy of much of the nation. Over the past five years, job growth has outpaced the national average by 50% and the trend is expected to continue. As Tennessee’s population rises, new construction projects have taken shape in response to the increased population across the state. Expanded highway infrastructure and a new Major League Soccer Stadium stadium will change the face of the state’s capital, while a large 900-acre data center will become a landmark in the town of Gallatin. Throughout the state of Tennessee, government agencies have maintained a focus on modern solutions to energy and environmental protection needs.

Local FODS Distributor, Care Supply Inc, has been serving contractors in the Nashville area and helping to inform stormwater engineers about the environmental benefits of the FODS Construction Entrance. Working with the local stormwater community, Care Supply has helped contractors implement the improved construction entrances while saving on costs. In 2019, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) approved FODS Reusable Construction Entrance as an alternative stabilized construction entrance for use on highway projects. As Nashville continues to evolve, Care Supply is ready to assist.

Interstate 440: Portable Construction Entrances

The growth experienced in the Music City has resulted in the need for renovations on a 7.6 mile stretch of the Interstate 440 (originally the Four Forty Parkway.) The renovations include expanding into the median to provide three lanes of travel in each direction. Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. was awarded the $152.9M Design-Build on August 1st of 2018 and the highway improvement is currently nearing completion. As construction took place, lanes on either side of this essential highway stayed active requiring careful planning and coordination between construction teams, emergency response teams and the Department of Transportation. The use of FODS construction entrances allowed Kiewit the construction crews to quickly prepare each phase of the site while eliminating the potential hazard of aggregate spilling onto the active lanes. As the entrances were reused on each phase of the project, required fewer loads of materials and to be transported to the job site helping to alleviate additional traffic congestion.

Nashville Fairgrounds Stadium

At the Nashville Fairgrounds on the south side of the metropolitan area, a new professional soccer stadium construction project is kicking off. This stadium will host 30,000 soccer fans and will stand as the largest soccer specific venue in the country. Remaining space will continue to be used for the state fair and other events throughout the year.  The have already begun initial demolition and site preparation work utilizing FODS Reusable Construction Entrances as part of their Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan to reduce costs and minimize trackout on city streets.

Gallatin Data Center

Tennessee’s proactive implementation of modern solutions includes erosion control measures as well as the development of a clean energy infrastructure. This clean energy has attracted heavy investment this summer just northeast of Nashville where an $800M construction project is underway. The town of Gallatin has attracted widespread attention after the project was unveiled as a large datacenter with high-volume clean energy demands. Gallatin welcomed the high paying jobs the datacenter would soon be offering. Covering nearly 1 million square feet, this facility will be powered by renewable energy supplied by the 50MW solar energy plant built by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The company also plans to invest in additional renewable energy assets as part of the company’s commitment to be powered by 100% renewable energy by the end of 2020. The contractor who was awarded the project has previous experience building datacenters and employs FODS Reusable Construction Entrances to prevent polluted sediment from leaving the construction site or entering storm drains.

These construction projects are among the largest undertaken in the history of Tennessee. The Department of Transportation and local governments in Tennessee are working to shift the energy infrastructure and construction process towards innovative and effective techniques that offer benefits to residents and the environment. FODS approval from the Department of Transportation allows highway contractors like Kiewit to resolve many common issues associated with highway construction entrances allowing for lower cost per entrance and reduce hazards associated with traditional solutions. Many other contractors are also using FODS on commercial, residential and aviation projects to reduce FOD and mitigate stormwater pollution. FODS is proud to offer proven technologies to assist the contractors who serve the Tennessee population.
