Landfill Sites Implementing FODS Trackout Control System

FODS Trackout Control System Used By Landfill Sites To Reduce Costs

FODS in the Field

Waste management is a crucial component of modern infrastructure. Proper management of solid waste at landfills protects the quality of the local water supply, and ensures that our cities can stay clean and safe. Since landfills can receive a high volume of transport vehicles traffic, effective trackout controls are necessary to contain sediment and debris which would otherwise be deposited on roadways and enter storm drains.

Similar to construction sites, which require temporary Vehicle Tracking Control BMPs, industrial sites also require Vehicle Tracking Controls which are installed on a permanent basis. On these long term applications, the benefits of installing effective, maintainable, and cost efficient solutions are compounded over time. Landfill operators can choose a variety of Vehicle Trackout Control BMPs including traditional aggregate based construction entrances, Wheel Wash systems, steel plates (rumble plates), FODS Trackout Control System or a combination of these techniques.

Due to the high volume of traffic, safety is a primary consideration on landfills. Operators establish processes which maintain safety on the site including implementing safe driving routes, keeping vehicle speeds to a minimum, and containing debris on-site all contribute to increased safety of the plant. Containing debris on-site helps to reduce risks to traffic on the external roadways adjacent to the site. Landfill site operators across the country are turning to FODS as an effective solution which can minimize vehicle sediment tracking and increase site safety while reducing labor and maintenance costs.

Springdale, AR - WM Eco-Vista Using FODS Construction Entrance System To Minimize Vehicle Sediment Tracking

Eco-Vista - Springdale, AR

Operated by Waste Management in Springdale, Arkansas, Eco-Vista serves the residents across Washington and Benton counties. The landfill has a capacity of 15,000 tons per day and commonly receives over 425 delivery vehicles per day. Due to the high traffic volume, the site employs a variety of Vehicle Tracking Control BMPs including wheel wash stations, aggregate entrances, as well as frequent street sweeping to control sediment tracking.

The operator recently explored additional BMPs to improve efficiency on the site and opted to use FODS Trackout Control Mats in conjunction with the wheel wash station. FODS mats were placed before and after the wheel wash station to remove the majority of sediment before vehicles enter the wash station, and to prevent vehicles from picking up additional sediment after the wash station.

The change resulted in significantly less sediment being deposited on access roads and public roadways, in turn reducing the amount of sweeping required to keep the roadways clean. The operator reported that they were able to reduce the number of sweeper brushes that they purchased from two bushes each month down to one brush every month or two. With each brush costing an average of $1,600, the operator was able to save $19,200+ annually on brushes in addition to ongoing labor savings.

The FODS mats are a high visibility bright yellow which makes it easy for drivers to identify the exit routes. In addition, the raised pyramids function as a speed bump which helps to reduce vehicle speed as they drive over the mats. These features as well as reduced sediment tracking provides a safer environment for vehicles on access routes and public roadways.

Garfield Heights, OH - FODS Trackout Control System Installed On Boyas Excavating Inc Landfill

Ohio Landfills

Across Ohio, multiple landfills are using FODS on high traffic landfills to reduce labor cost and maintain NPDES compliance. The FODS Trackout Control System proved beneficial to operators by increasing compliance with NPDES regulations and reducing labor required to maintain a clean site.

American Landfill in Waynesburg, Ohio, is operated by Waste Management and serves the residents of Stark County. With a high traffic volume, the operator budgets $50,000 per month for control measures including wheel wash maintenance, and street sweeping. This site deployed FODS before and after the wheel wash to improve performance.

Just 25 miles southeast in Amsterdam, OH, Apex Environmental operates the Interstate Landfill and is using FODS Trackout Control Systems in various locations to keep sediment tracking to a minimum. One set of mats was deployed to the drop zone access road, and an additional set was placed at the access point to the public road.

Boyas Excavating in Valley View, OH operates a construction debris landfill with upwards of 600 vehicles per day accessing the site. Using a combination of Vehicle Tracking Control methods, the site still required ongoing maintenance. Boyas owns a street sweeper which is run continuously to clean the access routes and the public roadway. After the addition of FODS, the site improved their ability to minimize sediment from delivery vehicles.

FODS: The Trusted Trackout Solution

FODS is being used across the country by the leading contractors in industries including Heavy Civil, Commercial, Energy, Highway & Bridge, Urban Development, and Aviation. As operators of landfills, recycling plants, and other industrial sites continue to look for ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs, FODS is becoming a trusted solution for permanent applications and temporary construction applications alike. Traditional techniques can leave a significant amount of sediment which must be regularly swept to remain compliant. Ongoing sweeping or shoveling can become labor-intensive, time-consuming, and costly. In many cases, FODS mats are used as a standalone solution for vehicle tracking, while other sites use FODS to augment wheel wash stations or other Vehicle Construction Track-Out Controls. When FODS is implemented, site operators can benefit from low operating costs, reduced labor and maintenance, and improved safety.
