CASE STUDY: FODS Reusable Construction Entrance on CDOT $350 Million Dollar Interstate 25 GAP Project

Thank you, Bowman Construction Supply for featuring Case Study Interstate 25 - FODS Trackout Control System on your website.

THE ISSUE

The Gap project is an 18-mile stretch of Interstate 25 from south of Castle Rock to Monument. It is the only four-lane section of I-25, connecting Colorado's two largest cities, Denver and Colorado Springs. Over the years, congestion, crashes and delays have grown due to population growth and more people using the road. Additionally an entry was need for Kraemer North America’s construction equipment during the GAP project that was compact and stopped construction site trackout.

THE PROJECT

In Fall 2018, CDOT began a $350 million dollar project with Kraemer North America to add an express lane on each side of Interstate 25 along an 18 mile stretch from Castle Rock to Monument, CO.

The 18-mile South Gap project is split into three geographic sections – north, middle and south. Construction began on the northern section, between Plum Creek Parkway and Sky View Lane/Tomah Road, in September 2018. In February 2019, crews began construction on the southern section of the project, between Greenland Road and Monument. In Summer 2019, construction began on the middle section of the project, between Sky View Lane/Tomah Road and Greenland Road. All 18-miles are currently under construction. The project is slated for completion in 2022.

THE CHALLENGE

Kraemer needed a way to allow heavy equipment easy on and off access to the construction site while minimizing dust and trackout onto the busy interstate.

THE SOLUTION

FODS Reusable compact construction entrances were installed along the I-25 corridor and allowed heavy equipment vehicles to enter and exit the interstate without causing trackout and dust to passing motorists.

FODS Mats are quick to install, easy to move, relocate, transport, and reuse. Each FODS mat can withstand 80 tons and has an expected lifespan of ten years plus.

FODS is fast becoming the new standard as a cost-effective reusable rockless construction trackout prevention system. FODS construction matting system replaces traditional wheel wash entrances, construction entrance rumble plates, and riprap entrances.
