O'hare 21 - Terminal 5 Expansion

FODS Used On O’Hare 21 Terminal 5 Expansion Project to Combat Sediment tracking and Reduce Foreign Object Debris

FODS in the Field

Significant enhancements are underway at O’Hare International Airport including the Terminal 5 Expansion led by a joint venture comprised of AECOM HUNT, Clayco Construction, and Bowa Construction. This $1B project is a part of the broader O’Hare 21 initiative which will transform the O’Hare International Airport into one the most advanced airports in the nation. O'Hare 21 is the most significant expansion in the airport's 79 year history and will include three Signature Projects: the Terminal 5 Expansion, O'Hare Global Terminal, and Satellite Concourses. In addition to increasing the efficiency of both domestic and international travel, the renovations will also showcase beautiful architectural designs and art installations to welcome travelers from around the globe.

Terminal 5 Expansion and Modernization Project

Beginning in 2019, the $1B T5 Project has been fully operational since 2023. The project includes a number of improvements to increase travel efficiency including additional security lanes, an upgraded baggage system, expanded curbside area for passenger drop-off and increased lanes for vehicle traffic. The renovations also expand the footprint of the structure by 350,000 square feet which increases passenger amenity space by 85% and includes additional space for airline lounges, concessions and seating. Now complete, ORD Terminal 5 has 10 additional gates and a six story parking garage adjacent to the Terminal building to provide more traveling options than ever before.

Terminal 5 Parking Garage

One of the project’s standout features is the construction of a new 6-level Terminal 5 Parking Garage, which utilizes advanced cast-in-place concrete and post-tension techniques for durability and efficiency and will more than double the available parking at the terminal and provide both short term and long term parking options. Located just adjacent to the terminal entrance, the parking garage will replace the existing surface parking lot and provide a total of 1700 spaces and an additional 650 spaces in the surface parking area. The six story structure will include two helical ramps for vehicle access between levels.

The High-Tech Construction Entrance Solution

A notable construction innovation in this project is the incorporation of FODS Trackout Control Mats as the stabilized construction entrance. The FODS system is widely used in both the aviation industry for FOD Prevention applications, and in the construction industry for use as a reusable stabilized construction entrance. The system is highly effective at containing debris and sediment within the job site and can be deployed over a variety of substrates including dirt, concrete, and asphalt. The unique FODS design features rows of alternating pyramids that efficiently traps and removes mud and debris from vehicles exiting the site to ensure that surrounding roads and airport runways remain free from construction-related contaminants. An effective trackout control system is a crucial component to the project's erosion control plan and helps to promote safety during construction operations which is paramount in sensitive airport construction environments.

FODS mats not only reflect the AECOM HUNT, Clayco Construction, and Bowa Construction joint venture’s Claycos commitment to efficient and safe construction, but Environmental BMP practices align with the O’Hare Modernization Program’s focus on sustainability. The mats are reusable for 10+ years and contribute to reducing the environmental impact of construction activities.

Terminal 5 Conclusion

Overall, the Terminal 5 project at O’Hare is one of the largest heavy civil construction projects currently ongoing in the United States. Its advanced construction techniques and the strategic use of FODS Trackout Control Mats sets a new standard in airport development. Clayco The AECOM HUNT, Clayco Construction, and Bowa Construction Joint-Venture underscores the importance of integrating innovative solutions and sustainability practices in large-scale infrastructure projects.
