FODS in use on CDOT building project
FODS Trackout Control Mats in use to prevent site trackout during the construction of The Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) new building in downtown Denver. This installation is a nice example of the FODS Trackout Control System being installed over asphalt.
Thank you Buildings By Design for selecting FODS and FODS distributor Bowman Construction Supply for providing the mats on this project.
The state and local government bodies provide resources to contractors and engineers to develop Stormwater Management Plans and Best Management Practices (BMPs) that comply with the Clean Water Act (CWA). The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) provides an approved product list and the Erosion Control & Stormwater Quality Guide to inform projects that involve public roadways.
The Erosion Control & Stormwater Quality Guide includes design and installation criteria for both aggregate-based and pre-fabricated Vehicle Tracking Control (VTC) systems. Aggregate based tracking pads dimensions are a minimum of 12 feet wide and 70 feet long which are excavated at least 6 inches. The excavated area is lined with a class 2 geotextile fabric and covered with 6 inches of aggregate. Pre-fabricated Vehicle tracking pads must be at least 12 feet wide and 35 feet long and are to be installed according to manufacturer specifications.
FODS mats can be installed without excavation and over a variety of substrates. Maintenance is needed when sediment builds up between the pyramids. The rockless system only needs to be cleaned with a street sweeper or shovel to restore to working condition. Our mats remove more sediment than traditional tracking systems as is evident based on CDOT specifications which require only half the length of FODS compared to aggregate based tracking pads. Mats are secured to the substrate either with form stakes or concrete sleeve anchors. At the end of the project, FODS can be taken to the next jobsite to be reused.
This system has been used throughout the state on numerous highway projects including the Highway 36 collapse in 2019 which highlight key benefits over traditional trackout such as quick deployment and high visibility. Our mats have also been used in notable locations including Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and School of Mines. Contractors, engineers, and inspectors have grown to trust FODS mats as an effective means to control trackout.
