As a government entity which works with multiple cities and municipalities across Colorado, The Regional Transportation District, known as "RTD" is always looking to up hold its responsibility to operate environmentally friendly and safe construction sites.
FODS was pleased to have its composite Track-Out Control systems selected to part in RTD's Best Management Practices field trial at the Southeast Rail Extension project.
Located in Lone Tree, CO and operated by Balfour Beatty Construction, the Southeast Rail Line Extension construction proiect consist of multiple job sites spread across the 2.3 mile long rail line extension. As with many construction sites, RTD and Balfour Beatty Construction wanted to avoid the headache, expense, and public disappointment which can occur from construction site track out on to public roads or contamination of storm water.
As is well documented, traditional rock stabilized construction entrances constructed using fabric and aggregate deteriorate as vehicles move across the entrance. Over time, the aggregate becomes tamped down and becomes embedded in the earth, allowing mud and dirt to build up on the surface of the trackout. One of RTD's particular concerns was the dust that arises from traditional construct track out's fill up with dirt.
This environmental concern, along with a desire to reduce the dirt being transported off of the site, led Balfour Beattv and RTD to turn to FODS rock-less track out control system. This system is installed using FODS twelve foot wide by seven foot long mats which we linked together to create a uniform composite track out control system. Due to the staggered pyramid design of the patented FODS track out control system cleans the entirety of every vehicles tires, forcing open the lugs of the tires causing mud and dirt to fall out.
Once the mud is removed from the tires, it falls to the pan of the mat, where it is us undisturbed by vehicles moving across the top of the pyramids on the mats. Which greatly reduces the amount of dust that is associated with a typical construction site trackouts.
By using the FODS system which does not contain rocks, RTD eliminated the concern of rocks becoming trapped in the lugs of tires or between the dual wheels on the rear axle of large trucks. These rocks become projectiles once the vehicles reach high speed after entering the public roads. This issue is well documented to cause damage to vehicles and injury or even death to drivers, passenger, or pedestrians.
The durability of the FODS Track-out mats allowed RTD to reuse the mats by relocated the track-out system as the project moves down the rail line.
Overall, the Best Management Practices field trial, RTD found that the FODS composite track out system reduced the amount of job site dust. Greatly reduced the amount of job site track out carried on to public streets, eliminated the concern and liability of rocks be displaced on the public roads, and delivered these benefits as a cost effective environmental solution to their construction site track out concerns.
