Scout Ground Protection Mats Used To Protect Downtown Tampa River Walk During Demolition
The Tampa Bay Convention Center recently undertook its largest renovation in history. Located in the heart of Tampa, the waterfront facility hosts visitors from around the country for over 300 annual events in the 600,000 square foot structure. The project scope includes renovations to the main ballrooms and restrooms and the addition of refreshments and dining experiences. For the $38 million Capital Improvement the city of Tampa chose Skanska USA, a division of Skanska AB based in Sweden.
Waterfront Meeting Rooms

Existing meeting room renovations are currently underway along with the construction of a new 16,000 square foot two-level waterfront meeting area which will provide views over the Hillsborough River with a brick terrace and outdoor space. Experience developer, Skanska, is conducting activities around business hours to reduce noise while events are being hosted. The beautiful views from the expansion will be a major attraction when construction is completed in June of 2023.
Protecting Substrate During Demolition

The project requires demolition of some of the wall structures which must be completed over existing finished floors. Skanska is installing over 340 Scout Ground Protection Mats (GPM) over the surrounding area, including parts of the Downtown Tampa River Walk, to protect the existing brick flooring during demolition. The mats enable demolition crews to proceed with operation without causing damage, and provide vehicle access without leaving tracks on the substrate. Skanska uses this technique to reduce damages from demolition activity, and prevent delays in the schedule.
The lightweight Scout Ground Protection Mats are made of durable high density polyethylene, and are designed to be used as a lightweight matting material to protect substrates and provide pedestrian and vehicle access. The mats are configurable as needed and can be easily relocated and connected to fit the requirements of each location they are deployed. The system links together using connecting hardware to form temporary roads, walkways, staging areas or work environments.
