27th Street Storm Drain Project

FODS in the Field

FODS construction site entrances are being placed above the drainage pipeline being installed below 27th avenue between Coors Field Parking Garage and California Street in Denver, Colorado.

The Problem

Public safety, flooding, and water quality were the main concerns facing the City and County of Denver in the well-developed areas of Five Points, the Curtis Park neighborhood and RiNo Art District. Currently, in this area, stormwater runoff drains to the South Platte River at the over-burdened 36th Street Outfall, leading to flooding during storms. During excavation, shoring, and construction of the drainage pipeline, trackout and construction dust were a concern to surrounding streets and residences.

The Project

The City and County of Denver is solving these issues with the 27th Street Stormwater Interceptor System project. The 27th Street Stormwater Interceptor System is a 3 phase project that will add:

An up-sized, underground drainage system to convey storm water from Five Points to the South Platte River, new and upgraded storm inlets to allow larger volumes of storm water to enter the storm drainage system more quickly and efficiently; reconstruction and repaving as well as new curb ramps for streets impacted by the construction.

The 6.7 Million Dollar Phase I construction began at the Coors Field Parking Garage in October 2018 and was completed in June 2019. It included an open cut and tunneling of large diameter storm sewer and its associated facilities as well as construction of a large storm water quality vault.

Concrete Works of Colorado, a respected multi-million dollar concrete construction company founded in 1978,  was contracted to complete the 5.1 Million Dollar Phase 2 that began in the fall of 2019 and will continue for 10 months. Phase II will improve drainage conditions in Basin 0062-1 located from 27th Street and Arapahoe street southeast to 27th Street and California Street. Phase II includes open cut of large diameter storm sewer and associated facilities. Phase 3 is still in the design stages.

The Challenge

During excavation, shoring, and construction of the drainage pipeline, FODS Reusable Construction Entrance is currently doing a tough job of stopping soil from tracking out into public streets and onto sidewalks, and mitigating dust to nearby residences. A reusable and easily movable compact construction entrance for an urban setting with excavation was needed as heavily travel city streets and residences are located on either side of the drainline project. The large concrete drain pipe is delivered daily to the site in addition to other heavy equipment and utility vehicles traveling across the FODS trackout mat system. Each FODS mat displaces and distributes 80 tons and has a lifespan of 10 plus years and will easily perform for the duration of Phase II and on future Concrete Works of Colorado projects.

The Solution

Concrete Works of Colorado chose to utilize ten FODS mats spanning two entrances on either side of 27th Street Storm Interceptor Project. FODS mats were positioned end to end and connected with steel hardware. When complete, the new storm drain system will connect to an existing 108-inch storm drain at Coors Field Parking Garage at Blake Street, balancing water flow between multiple systems and resulting in less flooding along the 27th and Washington Street corridors.

FODS Reusable Construction Entrance is 12 feet wide and 7 feet long in the direction of travel. FODS mats contain pyramids that are specifically engineered to spread tire lugs, causing debris to fall to the base of the mats where it remains undisturbed by subsequent vehicles. FODS mats prevent track out from leaving any construction site.

About FODS:

FODS, LLC is based in Denver, Colorado and is the manufacturer of FODS Trackout Control Mats. FODS mats offer the only cost effective and reusable replacement to traditional stabilized construction entrances which are typically constructed out of geo-fabric and a large amount of aggregate. Working among many industries such as construction, excavation, urbanization, drilling, fracking, mining, utilities, renewable energies, landfills, agriculture, Nascar, trucking, airport, national parks, telecommunication, military, forestry, railroads, engineering, state and local government, FODS has successively shown an innovative solution to heavy equipment entrance and exit trackout.
